2007 International Polar Year $1 Uncirculated Coin in Card
The International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY) is an international program of outreach and education into polar science.
Australia as an original signatory to the Antarctic Treaty (1961) has a proud history of involvement and exploration of Antarctica.
Given the significance of the International Polar Year and Australia’s involvement in the Antarctic region, the Royal Australian Mint will be releasing a Polar Series coin collection over the next three years.
The first release in the collection is a beautifully designed uncirculated coin depicting the Antarctic and Australian Antarctic Territory.
The Antarctic is an isolated, icy region, initially discovered by explorers in the 19th century.
With a vast array of fascinating fauna and flora, the Australian Antarctic Territory is home to a number of famous research bases, such as Mawson, Davis and Casey.
The Polar Series coins encapsulate Australia’s historical link to Antarctica.
