2011 Australian Bush Babies Kangaroo $1 PNC
The kangaroo is probably the most immediately recognisable of all Australian marsupials and the Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is found on its coat of arms. There are over 6o different species of kangaroo and its close relatives.
The Red, Eastern grey and Western grey are the most abundant species of kangaroos. Essentially nocturnal herbivores, kangaroos eat grasses, leaves, fungi and the shoots of small trees and need very little water to survive.
Kangaroos have powerful back legs with long feet, a distinctive tail which is used for balance, can hop up to 6o kilometers an hour and can jump up to three meters high.
All female kangaroos have front-opening pouches where the joey, or baby kangaroo, is raised until it is old enough to fend on its own.
Even when quite large the joey will still drink milk from its mother's pouch and jump into it head first when frightened.
