The Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a shy, small, gliding possum found in the forests and woodlands of eastern and southern Australia. It has a membrane extending from its fifth finger to its ankle enabling it to glide between trees and nesses its long bushy tail for stability and steering.
Sleeping by day in nests made of leaves in tree hollows, sugar gliders come out at night to feed on honeydew, nectar, pollen and sap.
Sugar gliders are very sociable creatures forming groups of up to seven whose young may share a nest. Twins are not uncommon among sugar gliders, although triplets are very rare. The baby glider remains in its mother's pouch for up to 70 days and then remains in the nest for next 30 to 40 days.
After this, it leaves the nest to forage, sually accompanying its mother or father, until it is adept on its own.
