2022 Crux The Southern Cross Limited-Edition Double Coin Prestige PNC

Crux is a constellation of the southern sky, crux being the Latin word for “cross”. Commonly known as the Southern Cross, the constellation is centered on four bright stars forming the shape of a cross, together with a fifth, faint star usually included in Crux.

Crux is a constellation of the southern sky, crux being the Latin word for “cross”. Commonly known as the Southern Cross, the constellation is centered on four bright stars forming the shape of a cross, together with a fifth, faint star usually included in Crux.

It has been part of First Nations astronomy for millennia and is an iconic image for people in the Southern Hemisphere. Early navigators used Crux as an aid for fixing the South Celestial Pole. An imaginary line drawn along the long axis of Crux, extending as a straight line to the horizon, gives the Pole’s position for any time of the year.

The constellation is featured on Australia’s national flag, as well as the flags of New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria and the Northern Territory. The Eureka flag, featuring Crux as the central motif, was flown in 1854 to rally disgruntled gold diggers of Ballarat (Vic.), prior to the battle of Eureka Stockade.

This postal numismatic cover and card houses two uncirculated “X” coins, one coloured and the other un-coloured, both coins depicting a graphic rendition of Crux (Southern Cross) from the Great Aussie Coin Hunt 3 series.

The coloured coin is a limited issue and the un-coloured coin the standard issue from the Coin Hunt. The Royal Australian Mint has produced the two coins in aluminium-bronze.
