2025 Aussie Big Things 2 $1 AlBr Uncirculated – The Big Penguin
The three-metre-high Big Penguin greets visitors on the foreshore of the small town of Penguin, located on the north coast of Tasmania on the traditional lands of the Tommeginne people.
Made of ferro-cement and coated with fibreglass, the Big Penguin was erected in 1975 to commemorate the centenary of the proclamation of the township.
Penguin was originally settled as a timber town in the 1860s and was named for the nearby rookeries of the world's smallest penguin, the Little Penguin Eudyptula novaehollandiae, which reaches just 30 centimetres in height. Perhaps the statue should be called the Big Little Penguin!.
