2018 Remembrance Day Armistice Centenary $2 C Mintmark Coin & Stamp Cover PNC

The 1918 Armistice that silenced the guns on the Western Front is also known as the Armistice of Compiegne, for the forest location at which its was signed. At 5am on 11 November 1918, Germany agreed to the terms of the Armistice drafted by the allies' Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch, which came into effect at 11am Paris time.

Hostilities had already ceased in other theaters of the Great War, so the Armistice of Compiegne effectively brought the war to an end, formalized by the Treaty of Versalles, signed in June 1919.

At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month a mionte's silence is observed in memory of soldiers whose lives have been lost during military service. Initially known Armistice Day , 11 November became known as Remembrance Day following World War II.
