 2004 Australia's Own Game - Selectively Gold Plated AFL $5 Proof Coin

The coin celebrated 130 years of AFL Football. July 1858 saw the birth of Australia's own game, Australian Football, when talented cricketer Thomas Wentworth Wills initiated the game as a winter fitness activity.

By the late 1800's clubs had been formed throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area and extended to Geelong. The ubiquitous oval and four goal posts were becoming a familiar sight and the rules were developing with a new code drawn up in 1874.

One hundred and thirty years on, Australia's own football code sees 420,000 participants with an annual aggregate of over 6.6 million spectators attending AFL matches.

The Grand Final culminates with the winning team being presented with the Australian Football league Premiership Cup.

This coveted silver trophy has been incorporated in the design of this limited edition NCLT $5 coin.
