2022 Black Hawk Medallion Cover

The Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk has played a pivotal role in Australian Army Aviation and the Royal Australian Air Force since its acceptance in 1987. The primary role of the helicopter has been to provide air mobility for troops and equipment in the battle zone. The Black Hawk can also carry out air reconnaissance, observation, direction of artillery fire, casualty evacuation and aerial fire support.

When required in the wider Australian community, the Black Hawk has played a vital role by assisting in disaster relief efforts and providing search and rescue capabilities. One of the most advanced battle helicopters, these aircraft are a favourite of many.

Drew Harrison, a leading Australian aviation artist, was commissioned to create an artwork, Black Hawk Sunset, to capture the gritty S-70A-9 Black Hawk as it approached its end of service with the Australian Army Aviation Corps in December 2021
