On 22 August 1872 the Overland Telegraph line (a system to send messages over long distances using cables and electric signals) was finished between Adelaide and Darwin. It has been described as the ‘greatest engineering feat carried out in nineteenth century Australia’.
Australia was no longer so isolated from the rest of the world.
Suddenly communication with London took less than 7 hours, and Australians rejoiced and never looked back - their geographic isolation was immediately and forever ameliorated. Newspapers were now fresh, business orders timely, and information just a Morse Code click away.
