2024 Diwali 1oz Silver Gilded Medallion - Perth Mint
The Perth Mint is delighted to present this 1oz silver gilded medallion to celebrate Diwali. Diwali is the ancient Hindu ‘festival of lights’. Celebrated by millions of people in India and all around the world, the five-day festival represents the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. The annual event marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year in October or November, with the date changing in accordance with the Hindu lunar calendar.
Rituals practiced during Diwali include cleaning and decorating homes with oil lamps called diyas, family feasts, gift-giving, fireworks and sweets are other long-established customs. Participants also pay homage to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and the elephant headed Ganesha, the god of good fortune.

DESIGN
Gilded in fine gold, the medallion’s reverse portrays a representation of Lakshmi sitting on a lotus flower, the symbol of enlightenment, with coins emerging from the palm of her hand. Holding lotus flowers, the deity is surrounded by a pattern of floral motifs and radiating lines. Also included in the design is the inscription ‘happy diwali’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the medallion’s weight and fineness.
The medallion’s gilded obverse features a representation of Ganesha sitting on a cushion while being attended by a mouse, one of his traditional mounts, who offers sweets as a symbol of generosity.
