2025 Aussie Big Things 2 - $1 Uncirculated Coin on Card – The Big Galah
2025 Aussie Big Things 2 $1 AlBr Uncirculated – The Big Galah
The colourful Big Galah perches in front of the Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop at Kimba, a town on the Eyre Highway at the top of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia.
It is located on the traditional lands of the Barngarla people. At eight metres high, the big bird is an eye-catching reminder of the pink-and-grey cockatoos common in the region.
The fibreglass-over-metal Big Galah was built over 18 months in 1993 by the then-owners of the gem shop to attract passing motorists.
The decorative artwork on the exterior was created by Karen Carr and Jill Pantiyasa. Tourists today flock to the Big Galah to be photographed as "one galah in front of another", the bird's name being Australian slang for "idiot".
