Lunar Year of the Horse

This remarkable release consists of four legal tender 1oz silver proof pieces that fits together to form a circle with a square in the centre, reminiscent of the first currency of the Chinese empire. These ‘ban liang’ coins were first cast during the Qin Dynasty around 200BCE.

The Horse is significant in traditional Chinese culture as one of 12 animals that participated in the Emperor’s Great Race, held to determine the order of their appearance in the lunar calendar. In pursuit of the fifth placed dragon, the free-spirited horse galloped towards the finish line with determination. In a sudden twist, the horse was startled by the snake who emerged from hiding under its hoof causing it to lurch back. Despite the setback, the resilient horse claimed seventh place.

Those born under the sign of the Chinese Lunar Horse in 2026, 2014, 2002, 1990 and every 12th preceding year are said to be independent, charismatic and love a sense of adventure. Being passionate and spirited, they are gifted with natural charm and an ability to inspire others.

The coin’s reverse portrays a coloured representation of a majestic mare alongside her young foal, both depicted with elegant manes in a striking galloping stance. The background includes towering mountains and the lush serenity of grasslands.

Also included in the design is a 1-gram pure gold privy insert portraying the Chinese character for ‘Horse’, the inscription ‘HORSE 2026’, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
